The Pen Is Mightier
Nov 19th, 2007 by Micah Tillman
(A quote from Bulwer-Lytton, of “It was a dark and stormy night” fame, believe it or not.)
I find it interesting that two groups who have always had to defend themselves against accusations that what they do doesn’t matter are now flexing their collective muscles.
The screenwriters remain on strike, and that is about to force us all to start watching reruns. It’s interesting that the stations don’t choose the other alternative: play nothing. That would be kind of like death for a television station though, I guess. But playing reruns is kind of death too.
“So you want to be a writer when you grow up, eh Johnny? That’s not a real job. Writers don’t do anything.”
Evidently now they do. And they even do by not doing.
The other group, of course, are the scientists whose “what does it matter what you’re computer simulation says?” days are over. When they can tie everything to climate change, everything they do matters (even the pure theoreticians).
So while I’ve already congratulated the scientists, I should now congratulate both groups.
We all think you matter now!

I think I’m being ironic in this post.
At least I think I am.
I would try to help you figure out if you are being ironic, except I can’t get past your title without busting out laughing thinking of that old SNL Celebrity Jeopardy skit.
Sean Connery: “I’ve got to ask you about The Penis Mightier.”
Trebek: “No, no, that’s “The Pen Is Mightier”
Connery: “You can gussy it up all you want Trebek, what I want to know is does it work? Will it really might my penis, man?”
*grin* Indeed. I debated with myself whether to make the literary reference to Bulwer-Lytton or the SNL reference. I’m glad you have now made the post compete by adding the SNL one :-D
What can I say? I rule.
Now when will the Artists be vindicated?
Hmmm . . . .
Well, the stage hands are on strike on Broadway, and they have to build sets and stuff. Which is kind of artsy. Right?
Though that’s not quite what we’re looking for.
When I come up with a good tactic, I shall let you know.
