Department of Corrections and Diplomas

Below you have a snippet of the latest edition of “Gorgeous Prince George’s,” the “Newsletter of Prince George’s County [MD] Government.” The pg. 7 announcement in the top right corner caught my eye:
There’s just so much that is “too good” about that I don’t know where to begin. I can hear the announcements now:
That’s right folks, ‘Reeducation’ has finally come the the US.
That’s right folks, they’ve finally given up on the idea of ‘justice’; and no longer seeing any difference between ‘punishment’/'protection’ and ‘correction’/ ‘rehabilitation’/'education’, they have combined the DOJ with the DOE. They both had the same goal anyway, right?
But actually, it’s that PG’s “County Correctional Center” has an education program to help inmates earn their high school diplomas. Which is actually kind of nifty, if you accept government education in the first place. Hopefully it helps inmates live better lives after getting out, and reduces crime thereby.
I just thought the phrasing was hilarious.

I agree with you on several points:
#1) It is indeed pretty nifty to require education (diplomas and whatnot) before freeing those who are incarcerated.
#2) As a society we are very confused, inconsistent, and ambivalent about whether we’re seeking justice, revenge, resitution, protection of everybody else or reeducation or the perpretators.
