In "Why heterosexual marriage should not be legal (or, how to relieve John Edward’s “personal conflict”)" you relate the religious and political philosophies of John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich. However, you failed to mention the societies and religions they grew up under.

Kucinich was raised Catholic (which is much more tolerant of homosexuality) and in Cleveland (a liberal city)

Edwards, however, was raised in the south (a much more rigid, Christian Conservative society) and as a Methodist which believes "the practice of homosexuality (to be) incompatible with Christian teaching" and that "self-avowed practicing homosexuals" cannot be ordained as ministers, and supports."

The enviroment in which one is raised can be a major factor in one's beliefs. Edwards has always been open about his deep personal faith (to the contrary to Kucinich) and his faith is of a more conservative and literal basis.
