When Faced with the Choice: McCain
Jul 9th, 2008 by Micah Tillman | 5 Comments |
Yesterday, some friends and us (The Wife and I) got into a discussion about Obama and McCain. I was the lone person who wasn’t going to be voting for Obama. They asked why.
Rush Limbaugh said it well:
It’s like the Super Bowl . . . . If your team isn’t in it, you root for the team you hate less. That’s McCain.
Of course, I said it first, when encouraging McCain to pick a Dem as his VP:
We [conservatives] don’t have a horse in this race or a dog in this fight, this is not our battle — or whatever the metaphor.
And in such a case, you pick the person who is most like you. And McCain is much more like me when it comes to the question of what government is.
McCain has the appropriate response to economic issues for a politician:
Then there’s his “I’ll veto earmark-laden bills and make earmarkers famous” response too.
From the neo-liberal’s view of government (see here and here), both of those should disqualify him. From the classical liberal point of view (see here and here), that makes him the better man for the job.

You mean, “I got it on teh interwebs first.” Rush said it first, even though the article wasn’t published till recently.
Right. My bad. Thanks for pointing that out to me, Me.
Should it be, “Some friends and we . . . got into a discussion . . . .”
I’ve been wondering about that too, Me.
Or is it, “I’ve been wondering about that too, I”?
I’m so annoyed at all of my friends who think Obama is the new Jesus. I really wish he were, because he’s just so darn GOOD at the whole savior-and-friend act. (Maybe he’s the antichrist!)
I’m anxious about the election to the point of apathy (possible? Yes.)…Is it more responsible of me to vote for “the lesser of two evils” or to simply not vote at all? Everyone says to definitely vote but honestly I’m not sure that’s the best choice…I don’t want to personally endorse either candidate. By not voting I know I give up my right to complain about the administration, but I don’t complain anyway so…
Bah! Stupid politics.
It should be “some friends and we.” The pronoun is the subject of the sentence and takes the nominative case. It should probably be “I’ve been wondering about that too, I.” However, this is much more controversial. The pronoun here is in the vocative case and English pronouns don’t have a vocative (for obvious reasons). I would default to the nominative. (In most languages, the vocative follows the nominative rather than the accusative.)
Joanna–
I know what you mean. *sigh* I think what finally ended the Obama fascination for me was the Will.I.Am Dipdive video.
Till then I thought he was a nice guy with bad politics. Now I think he’s a nice guy with bad politics and a disturbing ability to turn his followers into zombies (even if unintentionally).
I like to vote based on who scares me less. *grin* That criterion, of course, will lead to different conclusions for different people. But there it is.
Andrew–
At least I can congratulate myself on knowing there was a problem, even if I didn’t know the solution. Thanks for the info (I love this kind of linguistics stuff, even if I’m pretty clueless about a lot of it)!
