Marriage: Letting the Government Name Your Relationships

I saw Dan Savage, on the Colbert Report, explaining to Stephen Colbert how he and his “boyfriend” adopted a child before they got married, because they “couldn’t” get married at the time they wanted to adopt.
What he meant was that gay marriage wasn’t legal. Yet he said he “couldn’t” get married, and thus instead of adopting the child with his “husband,” he had to adopt the child with his “boyfriend.”

So, let me ask you a question:
How many other of your personal relationships do you wait for the government’s okay before beginning? How many other words do you keep yourself from calling people until the government gives you the green light?
Do you go to the court house to get their permission to call someone your “best friend”? Your “fiance”? Your “boyfriend”? Your “baby daddy”? Your “pastor”? Your “godmother”? Your “father”? Your “sister”?
Then why on earth would you wait for their permission to call someone your “spouse”?
____
I know, marriage is about legal rights, recognitions, etc. too.
But it makes me sick to think that people are actually waiting for the government’s permission to even name their relationships with each other.
When you give the government that much power over yourself . . . .
It’s staggering. I can’t even finish the sentence.
