My First Migraine

So, I was sitting on the couch, eating breakfast, and reading Justification: God’s Plan and Paul’s Vision, by N.T. Wright, this morning.
I noticed I was having a hard time reading — even more of a hard time than usual, that is. Then I noticed that words on the page were disappearing. That is, I had obvious blindspots.
Then a band of sparkliness appeared. It was kind of psychadelic.
And then it all went away and my head started hurting.
And then it started hurting worse.
And it got so bad I had to go back to bed.
The Wife told me I was having a migraine. I’m glad she knew what was going on, because it was freaky. It was like what being on drugs must be like, at first, except it wasn’t fun (like drugs purportedly are); and then it got extremely painful.
Fortunately, after spending good portions of the day lying down and not being able to do much besides watch basketball (I could never get into that sport), I’m feeling better now.
But I have a newfound (one word or two?) sympathy for migraine sufferers — especially since I think mine was probably on the low end of the migraine scale.

:( I’m sorry. That stinks.
I get a migraine once or twice a year and they lay me out flat.
Yeah– severe migraines usually lead me to not being able to listen to anything. Largeish doses of caffiene can be helpful. The difference between many otc migraine medicinees and general head ache meds is just caffienne. OTC stuff is moderately helpful– perscription stuff more so. I’m a big fan of immatrix, which is kind of an old-school med, so you have to really push for it.
A little silver lining to this rather hellacious cloud for me is that when the things receede, I often am left in a rather euphoric state– I imagine it’s all the endorphins still making me feel high but left with out anything to fight.
