Foo Fighters and Wall-E

Two things to report:
(1) The Foo Fighter’s album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, is the best album I’ve heard since Coldplay’s X&Y.
An essentially perfect album.
(Like Joy Electric’s The White Songbook.)
(Or Saints & Children’s Of Seasons, Of Souls. ;-)
(2) Wall-E is fantasmagorical. It’s amazing how much they could do with essentially no dialogue between the [...]

Nice to See

I’m glad people keep making films about global warming.  At least, I’m glad they keep making films of this type.
Haven’t seen it, of course.  But it’s good to combat the illusion that climate science is a unanimous democracy (when it’s really run by a fallible priesthood).

Get Smart
Awesome.  Really fantastic.  Huh-larious.
Oceans 13
Enjoyed it.  The Wife loved it.  I would have enjoyed it more had I been able to actually watch it (rather than working on other things).

The New Bond Title

In case anyone’s wondering, the new Bond film’s title, Quantum of Solace, is really cool.
A “quantum” is the smallest possible amount of something. It’s the amount that all other (non-zero) amounts are made from, by way of addition (a quantum + a quantum + a quantum + etc. = total amount).
(And without the idea of [...]

Joe Biden is at it again.
Sometimes, I think everything is best summed up by Queen Latifah’s line from Hairspray:
[Y]ou . . . better brace yourselves for a whole lotta ugly comin’ at you from a neverending parade of stupid.
The context was interracial relationships, but it applies to politics as well.
Paying attention to politics often feels [...]

Tootsie
Surprisingly good. Movies about people living lies really bother me, but I survived this one.
Deals with some good issues regarding what it means to be an excellent person, and whether it would be good to [...]

Cloverfield
Well-done thriller. Creates a lot of mystery through its limitation to the viewpoint of a single hand-held camera. (And you know how I feel about mystery.)
The character operating the camera through most of the movie is annoying — [...]

Dr. Horrible
Joss Whedon continues to be a genius. Seems to run in the family, in fact (his brothers appear to have worked with him on this one).
It’s a musical, and today may be the last day you can [...]

Hairspray
A perfect instantiation of joyousness in the midst of a problematic world. No bitterness. Haven’t actually watched it (technically), but it has been watched (multiple times, it seems) while I was in the room. And the songs are [...]

is good.
The Wife and I finally got to see it today.
Just proves once again that any movie for which George Lucas writes the story but not the script is bound to be good.
The man is a storywriter. Not a scriptwriter.
