Dear Fellow Congregants:
Remember to attend the Lent Atonement Series on Sunday March 21st, for Sunday School, rather than the Romans Series (since I won’t be there).
If you’d like to read ahead, or catch up, here’s the blog version of the series so far:
Romans 1:1-7, vv. 8-18, vv. 19-25, vv. 26-27, vv. 28-32 | [...]

My lecture today was primarily on Descartes’ two proofs of God’s existence in Meditation III.  They’re both fascinating proofs, and thus I thought I’d share them (translated more or less into my own terms).
____
First Proof
The first argument goes basically like this.
The idea of God is the idea of an infinite substance (i.e., the idea of [...]

Then Dr. Currid started talking about God’s “sovereignty.”
He cited the following passages, and claimed there were many others.  Because of such, he says:
“I think it’s difficult, if not impossible, to deny that everything happens on earth and in heaven because of God’s desire, will, and purpose.”
That is what sovereignty means, according to Dr. Currid.  Later [...]

2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be [...]

No Light without the Sun?

A quick note.
Yesterday I overheard some people talking about Augustine’s view of the Days of Creation.
They said Augustine had proved the Days couldn’t be literal days, because there is light on Day 1, but no Sun till Day whatever.
This completely misses two major points.
First, God creates the light, not the Sun.  God divides light from [...]

I’m listening now to Dr. John D. Currid’s lectures on “Judges through Poets” from RTS.
To set the background for Judges, he’s discussing Joshua, and the Israelite invasion of the Promised Land.
This, naturally, leads to the problem of what appears to be not only God-sanctioned, but God-instructed genocide.
____
Moses, claiming to be speaking for God — [...]

If belief about (i.e., orthodoxy) is preparation for belief in (i.e., orthopraxy), while belief in is the culmination of belief about, then we have to understand each in terms of the other.
So, in light of belief in, what must our orthodoxy be?
____
I. Mere Christianity
I think Christian orthodoxy is ultimately reducible to [...]
